Assemblymember Salas & Local Girl Scouts Introduce New Bill

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) was joined by Girl Scout Troop 2486 from the Central Valley to introduce AB 1951, which would provide instruction on how to properly retire the California State Flag. Emilee Carroll, a 17-year old scout from Bakersfield, emailed Assemblymember Salas asking him to author this legislation when she could not find information in California statute about correctly retiring the state flag.

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) issued the following statement in response to Governor Newsom’s proposed budget:

 

“The Governor’s proposed budget released today signals a strong path forward for California with historic investments that will help working families in the Central Valley,” said Assemblymember Salas. “I am encouraged by the funding for alleviating homelessness, building reserves, strengthening water reliability and resilience, streamlining affordable housing, recruiting more health professionals, making our communities safer, and investing in our future through student education and early childhood development."

Salas Introduces Bill to Provide Accommodations to Pregnant Correctional Officers

 

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas introduced Assembly Bill (AB) 1906 to provide reasonable working accommodations for all pregnant correctional officers to improve workplace conditions for female officers. Assemblymember Salas introduced the legislation after a former correctional office at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi sued the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) alleging that she was denied the opportunity to take a light-duty assignment while pregnant, and subsequently fell while responding to a fight between two inmates leading to the loss of her unborn child during her seventh month of pregnancy. Until 2015, CDCR allowed pregnant officers to work light-duty assignments.

 

Salas Introduces Bill to Improve Oversight & Accountability for Fairs

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) introduced Assembly Bill 1841 (AB 1841) which would implement crucial accountability and transparency measures recommended by the State Auditor following their investigation of a district agricultural association which operates under the oversight of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). These associations hold local fairs and exhibitions and hire employees to oversee operations and ensure that certain policies are being implemented. Following whistleblower complaints, the State Auditor’s report found that an association grossly mismanaged state resources and allowed their employees to misuse resources, sometimes with the approval or participation of supervisors.

FRESNO – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) was recognized by the California Central Valley Economic Development Corporation (CCVEDC) for securing $40,000 in the 2019-2020 state budget to support regional economic development efforts by the CCVEDC.

LEMOORE – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) joined law enforcement and community members in Kings County to officially unveil the Kings County Deputy Sheriff Allen Thomas Sharra Memorial Highway. Assemblymember Salas authored Assembly Concurrent Resolution 38 (ACR 38) earlier this year that officially designated a portion of State Route 41 in Kings County to honor the sacrifice of Deputy Sheriff Sharra who tragically lost his life during an accident in the line of duty on December 27, 1999. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Deputy Sheriff Sharra’s passing.

CORCORAN – Last week, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) and Dr. Jeffrey Garcia from Family Eye Care Optometry hosted free eye exams in Corcoran for community members to come and get their eyes checked. The event took place at the Family Eye Care office in Corcoran and offered a range of exams for residents.

Senior Scam Stoppers Held Across Kern County

BAKERSFIELD – Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield), in collaboration with the California Contractors State Licensing Board (CSLB), Wasco Senior Center, Department of Insurance, Kern County Sheriff’s Department, Department of Real Estate, Bakersfield Police Department, the Bureau of Automotive Repair, Kern County Adult Protective Services, and Blue Anthem Insurance hosted three additional Senior Scam Stopper seminars across Kern County. These educational sessions help inform local seniors and their families about different types of fraud such as identity theft, elder financial abuse, insurance scams and more.
