Salas Holds Informational Hearing on Drought Emergency Services

Update to ongoing drought conditions and recommendations moving forward

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield), Chair of the Assembly Committee on Accountability and Administrative Review, held an informational hearing at the State Capitol entitled “Drought Emergency Services: Protecting Our Most Vulnerable Communities”. The hearing convened key leaders in drought response to discuss the state’s response to the ongoing drought and its impact on the Central Valley region.

“As California enters its fourth year of extreme drought it is necessary to remain mindful of the progress made in addressing the crisis and identify the challenges that lie ahead,” said Salas. “When it comes to the drought, the most significant impacts are found in the Central Valley and this hearing shed light on ways to effectively assist our most vulnerable communities especially as we approach the peak of this year’s drought conditions.”

Salas Public Safety Bill Approved by Legislature

AB 1168 retains qualified peace officers; awaits Governor’s signature

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) announced that his Assembly Bill (AB) 1168 has been approved by both houses of the Legislature with bipartisan support and now advances to the Governor to be signed into law. The bill ensures that county jails can retain qualified personnel by bringing parity to deputy sheriffs that are hired.

“AB 1168 is a common-sense measure that will help our state retain qualified peace officers and ensure safety in our county jails,” said Assemblymember Salas. “The discrepancy that exists between officer classifications causes undue hardship for qualified deputies and also burdens counties that subsequently have to retrain those deputies.”

State Senate Committee Approves Biomass Legislation

AB 590 (Salas/Dahle) protects renewable energy, air quality, and jobs

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymembers Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) and Brian Dahle (R-Bieber) announced their Assembly Bill (AB) 590 was approved by the Senate Committee on Energy, Utilities, and Communications with unanimous and bipartisan support. AB 590 will incentivize biomass utilization of agriculture waste, divert biomass from landfills, save jobs, and create renewable energy.

“Biomass power generation is a clean and efficient way to produce renewable energy and help improve our air. In fact, the Covanta Delano power station has helped reduce 96 percent of the pollutants released from open-field burning while converting over 300,000 tons of agricultural waste per year into clean, renewable energy.” said Assemblymember Salas. “AB 590 provides the necessary structure and resources to protect and incentivize biomass power in California and I commend the Senate committee’s vote for moving this bill forward.”

Salas Issues Statement on Death of Bakersfield Police Officer

BAKERSFIELD – Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) today issued the following statement on the death of Bakersfield Police Officer David Nelson:

“I have worked tirelessly with local law enforcement to secure vital funding resources for the Central Valley in the budget - and today with the Governor’s signature, we will finally see that funding delivered to our communities,” said Assemblymember Salas. “The $5 million for public safety infrastructure in Valley cities will enable law enforcement agencies to better serve the public and ultimately, keep us safe.”

Salas Route 43 Bill Moves through Senate

AB 1043 (Salas) for Funding Central Valley Highway (SR 43) Passes Senate Committee

SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) announced that his Assembly Bill (AB) 1043 passed the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee. AB 1043 would add State Route 43 to the Interregional Road System (IRRS) and would make it eligible to compete for project funding in the Interregional Transportation Improvement Program (ITIP).

“Improvement projects for State Route 43 are long overdue. It serves a key route for local freight transportation,” said Assemblymember Salas. “This measure makes Route 43 eligible for additional safety improvements, repairs, and upgrades.”

“Wool Growers has been a staple in the community for over 60 years. Mayie Maitia has done more than just serve dishes from the South of France and Northern Spain – she has created a destination for the community to learn about and celebrate Basque heritage and culture,” said Assemblymember Salas. “I am proud to honor Wool Growers as the 32nd Assembly District Small Business of the Year.”
