Salas' Earthquake Gas Line Safety Bill Advances

SACRAMENTO – Assembly Bill (AB) 1923, authored by Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield), passed the Senate Housing Committee with bipartisan, unanimous support. AB 1923 will require the installation of seismic gas shutoff devices on any newly constructed or renovated homes. This legislation comes on the heels of the Ridgecrest earthquakes in Kern County last year during which gas lines leaked and multiple homes caught fire.

Workplace Safety Bill for Pregnant Correctional Officers Advances

SACRAMENTO – Assembly Bill (AB) 1906, authored by Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield), passed with bipartisan, unanimous support out of the Senate Labor, Public Employment and Retirement Committee. This legislation will provide reasonable working accommodations for all pregnant correctional officers to improve workplace conditions for female officers. Assemblymember Salas introduced the legislation after a former correctional officer at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi sued the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) alleging that she was denied the opportunity to take a light-duty assignment while pregnant, and subsequently fell while responding to a fight between two inmates leading to the loss of her unborn child during her seventh month of pregnancy.

Valley Students Awarded $10,000 for College Scholarships

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) and the California Latino Legislative Caucus Foundation (CLLCF) announced that 52 students across the state have been selected to receive a 2020 CLLCF scholarship worth $5,000. Two of these students were selected by Assemblymember Salas to each receive a scholarship.
