Salas Honors Dr. Sonya Christian as Woman of the Year


Annual Ceremony held in recognition of Women's History Month

SACRAMENTO - Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) and the California State Assembly honored Dr. Sonya Christian as the 32nd Assembly District Woman of the Year. Assemblymember Salas recognized Dr. Christian for her accomplishments as an advocate for continued education during the annual Assembly Floor ceremony.

"Dr. Sonya Christian has consistently demonstrated her commitment to improving and empowering our community," said Assemblymember Salas. "I am proud to recognize Sonya for her leadership in making sure that students have every opportunity to succeed and achieve their educational goals."


Since 2013, Dr. Sonya Christian has served as President of Bakersfield College. As President, Dr. Christian has re-energized the campus and community, positioning the College as a state and national leader. In 2015, Dr. Christian earned the Exemplary Program Award from the Board of Governors of California Community College's for the ground-breaking "Making It Happen" mentoring program at Bakersfield College.

Under her leadership, Dr. Christian has maintained the institution's 100-plus year history of quality instruction while promoting expanded opportunities for current and future students.

"I'm proud of this recognition of our work at Bakersfield College, in partnership with business, industry and other partners," said Dr. Christian. "I'm especially honored because Assemblymember Salas is someone who quietly works to move mountains for our community; and his portfolio of accomplishments in the assembly is remarkable."

Dr. Christian began her career in education at Bakersfield College in 1991, as a Mathematics faculty member and later as Division Chair and Dean in several departments including Science, Engineering, Allied Health and Mathematics. Dr. Christian serves as the 10th President in Bakersfield College's history.

The California Legislative Women's Caucus sponsors the annual "Woman of the Year" celebration as part of Women's History Month. Each year, the California State Assembly recognizes women throughout the state who have significantly contributed to the communities in their district.


Assemblymember Salas represents part of the City of Bakersfield, the cities of Arvin, Avenal, Corcoran, Delano, Hanford, Lemoore, McFarland, Shafter, Wasco, and the communities of Armona, Buttonwillow, Home Garden, Kettleman City, Lamont, Lost Hills, Stratford and Weedpatch.
