BAKERSFIELD – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) hosted annual “Stuff the Bus” school supply drives in Shafter and Lemoore to collect donations to benefit local students. Salas partnered with community leaders and local organizations at both events, including the Shafter Lions Club, Councilmember Gilbert Alvarado, Shafter Healthy Start, the Dollar General in Shafter, the Lemoore and Kings Lions Clubs and Kmart in Lemoore to collect backpacks, pencils, notebooks and other school supplies for elementary and junior high school students.

“We really want to thank Rudy for coming out and sponsoring this event,” said Arthur Plaza Jr. of the Shafter Lions Club. “We really appreciate it. We had a great turn out and a lot of kids will be heading back to school excited and ready to succeed.”

“These events are all about the students and getting them prepared and enthusiastic about coming back to school,” said Rosa A. Romero, Principal of Richland Junior High and Director of Student & Family Support Services for Richland School District. “I want to thank Assemblymember Salas for helping out our students with this event. This year we were able to collect backpacks and other school supplies for more than 300 students.”

“It's great to have a representative like Rudy Salas that truly cares about his constituents,” said Dr. Jeff Garcia of the Lemoore and Kings Lions Clubs. “Programs like today's Stuff the Bus in collaboration with the Kings Lions Club is one of those great community projects that helps local students and families in need.  Rudy Salas has championed so much for all of us living in his district.”

“For a lot of students, these school supplies are more than just a backpack or a notebook—it gives kids confidence and gets them excited to head back to school ready to learn,” said Assemblymember Salas. “I want to thank the many community partners and families who make these events possible.”

The annual “Stuff the Bus” school supply drives and backpack distribution events are held by Assemblymember Salas and partnering organizations throughout the 32nd Assembly District to help students achieve academic success.
