Community Coat Drive Held with Salas and Community Partners
BAKERSFIELD – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) concluded two days of free coat drives for young students across Kern county. These events were held in partnership with Aera Energy and local Head Start programs under the Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK).
“As we head into fall and the weather begins to cool down, it is important that our kids have the clothing they need to stay warm and healthy,” said Assemblymember Salas. “A simple item like a winter coat can make a huge difference for families in the Valley. I would like to thank Aera Energy for making these events possible and donating coats to hundreds of kids throughout the Valley.”
Assemblymember Salas, Aera Energy and CAPK hosted three separate coat drives at the Delano Child Development Center in Delano, Primeros Pasos Child Development Center in Arvin, and the San Diego Child Development Center in Lamont.
“As a mother, I know it takes a lot to get children ready for school,” shared Janea’ Benton, Public Affairs Specialist for Aera Energy. “By providing these coats it’s one less thing parents have to worry about and can continue to focus on helping their children be successful in their education.”
“Our families are so humbled and today they were given a sense of warmth and gratitude knowing that people care and that their child has a jacket to enjoy and keep them warm,” said Yolanda Gonzales, State Director for HeadStart at CAPK. “Thank you to Assemblymember Rudy Salas and Senator Melissa Hurtado and all of the volunteers for giving their time and making a difference by providing a gift of love and caring to our HeadStart children and families.”
In total, 400 coats were provided to student’s in-need across the Valley. CAPK supervisors were on-site to help with distribution and transportation and were also assisted by representatives from Senator Melissa Hurtado and Congressman T.J. Cox’s office.
Assemblymember Salas represents part of the City of Bakersfield, the cities of Arvin, Hanford, Corcoran, Delano, Lemoore, McFarland, Shafter, Wasco, and the communities of Armona, Avenal, Buttonwillow, Home Garden, Kettleman City, Lamont, Lost Hills, Stratford and Weedpatch.
