Appointments Workshop Inspires Valley Residents to Apply for State Boards

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield), hosted an Appointments Workshop to instruct local Central Valley professionals on how to apply for a state board or commission. Assemblymember Salas was joined by Governor Gavin Newsom’s Appointments Secretary, Cathryn Rivera-Hernandez, Dr. Sonya Christian, President of Bakersfield College, John Nilon, California State University Board of Trustees, Raji Brar, California Regional Water Quality Control Board, and Dr. Jeffrey Garcia, California Board of Optometry.

“Today’s workshop was all about getting more voices from the Central Valley on our state boards.” said Assemblymember Salas. “Professionals in the Valley have so much experience to offer and we need to ensure that our voices are represented on these boards and commissions that shape the future of California. I hope today’s workshop inspired Valley residents to take the leap and apply for an appointment to any of the state boards ranging from the local Fair Board to Workforce Development and more. California is stronger with more voices from the Valley.”

During the workshop, panelists shared their experiences applying for different state boards while walking participants through the appointments process.

It is important for Kern County and the Central Valley to be represented in crucial statewide conversations, and I hope that this workshop encourages people in the community to serve on state boards and commissions so that the Central Valley perspective is well represented in the democratic process. Thousands of vacancies exist each year on state boards and commissions covering a variety of industries and issues such as: County Fairs, Police Training, Mental Health, Barbery and Cosmetology, Water Quality, and more.
