Assemblymember Salas Co-Hosts Coat Distribution for Valley Children
BAKERSFIELD – Today, Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) co-hosted an annual coat drive for kids across Kern county. This event was held in partnership with Aera Energy, Chevron, and the Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK).
“During these tough times, it is important that our community makes sure that our kids have necessary items like winter clothing to stay warm and healthy,” said Assemblymember Salas. “A simple item like a winter coat can make a huge difference for families in the Valley, who are struggling this holiday season. I would like to thank Aera Energy, Chevron and CAPK for making this event possible and donating coats to hundreds of our local kids.”
Due to the health and economic crisis caused by COVID-19, studies show that families across the nation are facing increased hardships with 26 million adults reporting that their household sometimes or often did not have enough to eat in the last seven days. Additionally, an estimated 45 percent of children are living in households that have trouble covering usual expenses.
“I believe that giving back to our children and families, especially in times like these, lifting those in need is priceless, said Yolanda Gonzales, Director of Head Start/State Child Development at CAPK. “Thanks to our collaboration with Aera, Chevron, and Assemblymember Salas, we were able to make this possible.”
In response to the growing need in the community, Assemblymember Salas, Aera Energy, Chevron, and CAPK hosted this year's coat distribution at the headquarters of CAPK.
“We know families continue to struggle as COVID-19 continues to present challenges we could have never imagined," said Jamie Swetalla, public affairs coordinator for Aera Energy. “Our neighbors can count on our support when times are good and especially now during these difficult times. We hope that through our work with Assemblymember Salas and Communication Action Partnership of Kern that no child will go without the basic necessity of a warm coat this winter.”
“The Holiday season is a wonderful time to unite as a community and support those who need it most,” said Megan Lopez, Chevron Public Affairs Representative. “Chevron is thankful for the partnership with Assemblymember Rudy Salas, Aera Energy and Community Action Partnership of Kern to provide warm jackets to families across Kern County. We wish all Kern County residents a safe and joyous holiday season.”
In total, 800 coats were provided to kids at every Head Start in Kern County, as well as children from the Friendship House Youth Center and Shafter Youth Center.
