Salas Honors El Puesto Cocina y Cantina as Small Business of the Year

Local restaurant recognized for their role in the community

SACRAMENTO, CA - Assemblymember Salas (D-Bakersfield) honored El Puesto in Bakersfield as the 32nd Assembly District’s Small Business of the Year, acknowledging their service to Kern County residents. El Puesto is a family run restaurant located on a small side street on Mt. Vernon and Brundage Lane in Bakersfield. It has flourished in the past two years and locals and nonlocals throughout the state are flocking to try their memorable dishes.  Since its inception, it has grown from a small shack to a beautiful cultural center of Mexican Michoacan inspired cuisine.

“I am proud to recognize El Puesto as our small business of the year,” said Assemblymember Rudy Salas. “The growth and popularity of El Puesto shows the positive impact a small business can have in our community. El Puesto’s infusion of art, culture, and home-style meals provides a delicacy for all patrons. El Puesto’s humble beginnings serve as an example that hard work can lead to achieving the American Dream – I look forward to what they are cooking up next.”

El Puesto Cocina y Cantina opened its doors during the pandemic, a time when most business were closing their doors. “El Puesto is an example of what following your dreams represents. No matter how humble the initial outcome may be, it is the value and quality of the work you put in driven by love for what you do that matters,” said Christian Alvarez. “Who would have ever thought the little Puesto on the side street on Mt. Vernon and Brundage Ln. would attract so many individuals who loved our food and believed in our vision. Assemblyman Rudy Salas was one of those individuals who came and experienced our cuisine. It became one of his favorite eateries; he believed in our small business. It is with pride that we accept this distinguished honor as “Small Business of The Year” in Rudy Salas’s district. We are forever grateful to our community and Assemblyman Salas for recognizing our humble small business with such great honor.

Each year, the California Small Business Association hosts California Small Business Day, which recognizes small businesses throughout the state. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on California small businesses community. Small Business Saturday is on Saturday, November 26th, an annual holiday encouraging people to shop and dine locally and support their community.
