(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) celebrated Portuguese Heritage Month with the passage of Assembly Concurrent Resolution (ACR) 187 on the floor of the California State Assembly. “It is my pleasure to honor Portuguese Americans with this resolution in recognition of their contributions to the State through culture, music, arts, cooking, and other festivities” said Salas. ACR 187 notes that the first Portuguese settlers came to California from the Azores Islands in the early 19th century and that among the great Portuguese Americans are composer John Phillip Sousa, poet Emma Lazarus who’s “The New Colossus” is on the Statute of Liberty, actor Tom Hanks, and many others.
